Wedding Dresses Through the Years

Oh, how the times have changed!

While the world keeps on changing, so does the world of fashion, and bridal couture is no exception. Even though many of today’s designers pull inspiration from vintage fashion, they are typically modern gowns with a twist or element that feels vintage. This keeps some styles looking timeless while others show their age.

What is the first thing you think of when you think of bridal fashion? Is it the veil? The bouquet? The shoes?

Usually, the first thing that comes to mind is the dress and although it is the colour we associate with a wedding dress, white wasn’t always the norm in bridal fashion. Before Queen Victoria debuted a white, lace-trimmed wedding dress in 1840, woman typically wore their finest dress to the occasion. Some brides still opt for a coloured dress, but more times than not, brides choose to make their way down the aisle in a white or ivory dress.

No matter the trend at the time, it has been made very clear that the wedding dresses that were in style in the 1800’s and the 1900’s are not that the same as what we find on the racks today. We won’t be stepping that far back in time but follow with us as we look back on wedding dresses from the 1950’s, up until 2019 and see if your dress can stand the test of time.
